Familiarising UNSW’s academic staff with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals

Training modules have been developed to support staff to work with a more sustainable mindset.

UNSW Sustainability and the Pro Vice-Chancellor Education & Student Experience (PVCESE) are proud to launch two new Continuing Professional Development (CPD) modules exploring the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) developed by the United Nations.

These modules are presented in a simple, easy way to help academics become familiar with the SDGs, and consider ways that sustainability thinking can be included in their own teaching, to support UNSW’s efforts in promoting sustainability.

Sustainable Development Goals – Introduction presents the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals; the 2030 Agenda, the goals and targets for the SDGs, interlinkages between SDGs, and the transformations needed.

Sustainable Development Goal 13 – Climate Action explores the core themes involved in discussing and taking climate action. It introduces academics to the empirical evidence for human-made climate change, the impacts at the global level and also what global warming means for Australia, specifically for the Great Barrier Reef.

Each module takes around two hours to complete and can be done at the academics' own pace.

The SDG Modules link to the SDG Toolkit, an educational resource released in 2020 that supports academic staff to incorporate sustainability thinking into their course content. An accompanying series of videos features UNSW educators and leaders explaining the challenges and opportunities associated with each SDG, and is available via a YouTube playlist.

These resources to support the integration of the SDGs into learning and teaching programs are a key component of UNSW’s Environmental Sustainability Plan 2019-21.
