UNSW parking permit changes are coming in 2021

UNSW parking permit changes

Estate Management is introducing virtual permits (vPermit) to replace the current UNSW annual staff parking permit system. Contributing to our Sustainability goals, with a vPermit, your car’s licence plate acts as identification and no windscreen stickers are required.

A new convenient UNSW web portal will be available for staff to register for the vPermit online. You can amend, cancel and add another vehicle at any time using the online portal.

Staff on continuing and fixed term arrangements can register online to salary sacrifice the vPermit. Payment will be deducted on a fortnightly basis. For staff employed on different arrangements, an annual permit can be purchased online using a debit or credit card. Parking rates for 2021 will remain the same as was introduced for 2020.

The University is also adapting to new ways of working in response to COVID-19. To cater for staff on flexible working arrangements and for staff who may not drive and park on campus every day, the CellOPark ‘pay as you go’ solution is being rolled out as an alternative to the vPermit for staff. The ‘pay as you go’ solution enables staff to pay a flat daily rate to park on campus on the day they choose to drive. A competitive flat rate of $8 per day will be introduced for standard 'pay as you go' parking bays and $24 per day for reserved 'pay as you go' parking bays. Staff will need to download and register via the CellOPark App.

Parking for staff with a vPermit or using the CellOPark App will be available in the designated UNSW permit holder parking bays in the car parks on campus.

Casual and visitor parking on campus will continue to be offered via the CellOPark App and ‘pay by plate’ meters. The flexibility of this solution enables UNSW to change its parking arrangements easily, as was done to support NSW Health staff with discounted parking in UNSW car parks during the COVID-19 pandemic.

To assist staff with the transition to the new parking system, a decision has been made to extend the current free parking arrangements on campus for UNSW students and staff to the end of January 2021.

Staff will be able to register for a vPermit via the new online portal from mid-January 2021. This will provide staff with a few weeks to consider their parking options before the new parking system is officially ‘live’ on Monday 1 February 2021.

In summary:

  • Annual staff parking permits will be provided by the new vPermit system. These will be available to purchase online from mid-January 2021. For staff on continuing and fixed term arrangements these will continue to be offered as salary sacrifice. For staff on other arrangements, these can be purchased using a debit or credit card. There will be no increase in parking fees for 2021.
  • A new system of ‘pay as you go’ will be offered to staff from the start of February 2021. This will be offered through the online CellOPark App at a flat rate of $8 per day (standard) or $24 per day (reserved).
  • Casual and visitor parking will continue to be offered via the CellOPark App and ‘pay by plate meters’ at current rates.
