UNSW Library has updated guidance and resources for teaching and research staff about accessing journal content and services from major publishers in 2026.
Each year, the Council of Australasian University Librarians (CAUL) negotiates more than 100 publisher agreements with $250 million worth of journal and other content subscriptions on behalf of academic libraries, and UNSW Library negotiates with hundreds of other vendors for additional content and products.
This year, CAUL has been negotiating new journal and open access publishing agreements with major publishers, in collaboration with the senior academic leader-led CAUL Open Access Negotiation Strategy Committee (COANSC) and the support of Universities Australia and Universities New Zealand / Te Pokai Tara.
Good progress has been made with Taylor & Francis, Wiley and Springer-Nature to achieve agreements that are more sustainable, transparent and equitable for the sector.
Negotiations with one major publisher, Elsevier, have been paused and Universities Australia, Universities New Zealand / Te Pokai Tara and CAUL released a joint statement on 13 November 2025 about the pause for ScienceDirect journals. This means there is currently no sector or UNSW agreement for the provision of the Elsevier ScienceDirect journals and Elsevier open access publishing services for 2026.
The Library is implementing a contingency plan in response to not having an Elsevier ScienceDirect agreement in place. This includes activating post-termination access rights, assessing unmediated document delivery and inter-library loan services, reviewing the use of open access options, managing Leganto course resource list links, and publishing options for authors.
Students and staff can access details on the UNSW Library website (login required).
