It was an opportunity to showcase the inaugural student cohort, academic programs and growing connections between NSW and India.

The NSW Treasurer, The Hon. Daniel Mookhey MLC, visited UNSW Bengaluru during his recent visit to India, meeting students, academics and professional staff and learning more about the University’s first international campus.

The visit provided an opportunity to showcase UNSW Bengaluru’s inaugural student cohort including scholarship recipients, academic programs and growing connections with industry and government in India.

UNSW Bengaluru officially opened in July as UNSW’s first international campus. The campus currently offers programs in Computer Science, Data Science and Decisions, Business and Cyber Security, providing Indian students with access to a globally recognised UNSW education while strengthening connections between Australia and India.

The Treasurer was welcomed by Professor Jayashree Payyazhi, Rector of UNSW Bengaluru, alongside colleagues from UNSW Bengaluru and UNSW Sydney. The program included discussions with students, including recipients of UNSW Bengaluru’s Future Leaders Access Scholarship, Progress Scholarship and the Rector's Leadership and Excellence Scholarship.

Professor Payyazhi highlighted the campus’s role as a tangible link between NSW and India, and its ambition to build strong relationships with students, industry, universities and government.

The visit held particular significance for the Treasurer, who is the first Australian politician of Indian background to be elected to the NSW Parliament. He spoke with students and colleagues about the importance of strengthening the cultural, educational and economic ties between NSW and India.

During the visit Treasurer Mookhey spoke to students about the important of education as a driver of relations between Australia and India. He also highlighted his excitement about the opportunities for collaboration between business, academics and students being led by UNSW’s Bengaluru campus.

Several organisations expressed interest in working with UNSW Bengaluru on student projects, guest lectures and broader industry engagement.

UNSW Bengaluru’s participation in the Treasurer’s visit demonstrates the campus’s emerging role in the Australia-India relationship and its potential to support deeper collaboration across education, research, government and industry.
