The global initiative aims to embed the value of a healthy ocean into social and economic development decisions.
The UNSW Centre for Sustainable Development Reform’s work in hosting the Global Ocean Accounts Partnership (GOAP) has been endorsed as a key initiative in the UN Ocean Decade Programme on Sustainable Ocean Planning.
The endorsement recognises GOAP as advancing the Ocean Decade vision by transforming how ocean resources are measured and valued.
Endorsement as an Ocean Decade Project shows how essential ocean accounts are to delivering a sustainable future that supports communities, nature and a livable climate. It underscores the contribution the Centre for Sustainable Development Reform (CSDR) work makes to UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 14: Life Below Water.
About the Global Ocean Accounts Partnership
GOAP is a global, multi-stakeholder initiative established to enable countries and other entities to measure and manage progress toward ocean-based sustainable development and climate action. It aims to embed ocean health and human wellbeing at the core of investment decisions and government economic planning.
Ocean accounts measure progress toward ocean sustainable development, align with international frameworks and have a similar structure to national economic accounts.
GOAP currently has 44 member organisations from 23 countries, with 33 countries having ocean accounting initiatives underway. It is their work developing, implementing and advocating for ocean accounts that has helped deliver recognition by the UN Ocean Decade.
What is the UN Ocean Decade?
The Ocean Decade mission is to support transformative ocean science solutions for sustainable development, connecting people and our oceans. Its vision is: “The science we need for the ocean we want”.
The program provides a framework for scientists and stakeholders from different sectors to develop scientific knowledge and partnerships. This aims to accelerate ocean science advances so we can better understand ocean systems and create science-based solutions to achieve the SDG 2030 Agenda.
The Centre for Sustainable Development Reform’s work as Secretariat of GOAP was identified as being particularly aligned with three of the 10 challenges that are part of the Ocean Decade:
- Challenge 4: Sustainable Ocean Economy
- Challenge 7: Ocean Observations
- Challenge 9: Capacity Building.
