Self-manage suspicious emails with a new AI capability

Progress for All

The new AI-powered technology quarantines suspicious emails, allowing you to review and release them if you determine they’re safe.

The threat posed by cybercriminals has continued to evolve, particularly as they use AI to craft more convincing and targeted email attacks. In response, UNSW has introduced sophisticated technology to help identify and prevent these email-borne threats.

These new email protection technologies use AI and machine learning to better protect our University community from malicious attachments, phishing, account compromise and email fraud. This enhances how we manage email security, making it safer, smarter and more user-friendly.

What’s changing?

From July, UNSW staff can review and release suspicious emails that the system flags and quarantines. Previously they had to contact the IT Service Centre. Being able to self-manage quarantined emails should improve your experience and reduce delays.

 How does it work?

When a suspicious email is detected, you'll receive a notification from the UNSW Email Protection mailbox that:

  • explains why the email might be dangerous
  • provides a safe preview of the quarantined email with any links or attachments disabled.

What should you do?

If you receive an email quarantine notification, please review the information and the email preview, then choose one of these options:

  • Report and Delete: Use this if the content looks suspicious or if you’re unsure about the sender. This action marks the email as malicious and deletes it.
  • Release: If you trust the sender, you can release the email to your inbox.

Helpful tips:

  • Warning banners only appear on inbound emails.
  • Quarantine alerts will come from: UNSW Email Protection email-protection@unsw.edu.au.
  • Your actions train the system. The AI-powered technology learns from what you report or release.

Non-suspicious email communications will remain unchanged.
