The fellowship offers up to $60,000 for projects that advance knowledge to aid Australian defence.
Applications for the 2027 Spitfire Memorial Defence Fellowship are now open.
The annual fellowship is awarded to individuals who plan to undertake programs of study or research to improve defence-related capability. Recipients receive financial support of up to $60,000 per annum and significant public recognition.
The fellowship was created by pilots of 457 Squadron Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), including the late AVM Lyndon Compton AO OBE, the late FLTLT Edward Sly DFC MiD and the late FLTLT Philip (Peter) Watson DFC. Their vision was that the fellowship be an ongoing living memorial rather than a traditional granite-and-bronze monument.
Since its inception in 1998, more than 20 fellowships have been awarded to researchers who are advancing knowledge and expertise to support the defence of Australia.
Current fellow Dr Michael Nielsen’s project is Enhancing negative luminescence for covert communications and night-time thermoradiative power.
The fellowship is open to Australian citizens for projects that will be completed by December 2027.
Application close 11.00pm, Sunday 2 August 2026.
