The new Act has significant changes all staff should be aware of.

The Public Interest Disclosures Act promotes the reporting of serious wrongdoing, commonly referred to as “whistleblowing,” and protects those who speak up. The new Act, which came into effect on 1 October 2023, includes new responsibilities for staff, in particular increased reporting obligations for managers.

A new training module will explain your responsibilities

All staff have been enrolled in the Speaking Up Against Wrongdoing module which explains the Act’s purpose in more detail. Completing this module is mandatory. Please take your time to absorb the information.

UNSW supports a safe speak-up culture. Making a public interest disclosure aligns with our Values in Action. We are committed to providing confidential pathways for staff to notify us of potential wrongdoing.

The University’s preference is to receive public interest disclosures through Your Call, an external hotline to report wrongdoing. You can choose to remain anonymous if you make a public interest disclosure through Your Call.

The role of managers in facilitating whistleblowing

Managers play an important role in creating a team culture that encourages and facilitates the making and appropriate handling of public interest disclosures and other complaints about wrongdoing.

Staff can now disclose suspected serious wrongdoing to their manager. Managers then have an obligation to refer this report to Your Call or a nominated UNSW Disclosure Officer.

Make a confidential enquiry

If you would like to ask a question before you officially make a public interest disclosure, or if you would like to discuss whether the conduct you have witnessed constitutes serious wrongdoing, email Bron Greene, Director, UNSW Conduct and Integrity, and Riley O’Keeffe, Manager, UNSW Disclosures and Complex Investigations, at SpeakUp@unsw.edu.au.

Only Bron and Riley have access to this inbox. Your enquiry will be treated as strictly confidential and won’t be discussed with anyone without your consent.
