Keeping our campuses safe this winter

UNSW is reminding students and staff to stay aware of their surroundings and report concerning behaviour, as Protective Services and NSW Police continue increased safety operations across campus this winter. 

UNSW is continuing to work closely with Protective Services and NSW Police in response to a recent increase in anti-social behaviour occurring on and around campus.

These incidents have included unsafe use of e-bikes, misuse of fire safety equipment, verbal abuse and disruptive behaviour affecting students, staff and visitors.

Protective Services, together with local police and youth liaison officers, has increased patrols and targeted operations across campus and surrounding areas. Additional police and security presence will continue across campus during school holiday periods.

While UNSW campuses remain safe and operational, the University is encouraging everyone to remain mindful of the surroundings, particularly during darker winter evenings.

This approach reflects UNSW’s ongoing safety culture message: Think Safe – Be Safe – Home Safe – encouraging everyone in our community to stay aware, act safely and support one another on campus.

Stay safe on campus

Protective Services encourages students and staff to:

• stay alert and avoid distractions when moving around campus
• travel with others where possible after daylight hours
• report suspicious or unsafe behaviour immediately
• seek assistance if they feel unsafe or require support. 

UNSW does not tolerate racist, abusive or threatening behaviour and remains committed to maintaining a safe, inclusive and respectful environment for all members of the University community.

Reporting concerns and getting help

If something feels unsafe, unusual or out of place, report it immediately.

Protective Services operates 24 hours a day and can assist with safety concerns, suspicious behaviour and emergency situations across campus.

Students and staff are encouraged to download the SafeZone app, which provides direct access to campus safety support and emergency assistance.
