Collaborating with colleagues can help us all use our digital systems securely.
UNSW’s Cyber Security Communities of Practice (CoPs) bring staff together to share knowledge, discuss challenges and build a stronger understanding of how to use University systems safely and responsibly.
Running once a month throughout 2026, the CoPs are open to all staff and focus on three key areas of cyber security practice: Governance & Risk, Awareness and Secure Coding.
Each session is designed to support you in your day-to-day role by turning complex security concepts into practical, shared learning.
Learning from real scenarios
Cyber security is a collective responsibility, shaped by everyday choices, informed conversations and continuous learning. The Cyber Security CoPs create space for open discussion between staff from different teams and disciplines, recognising that cyber security isn’t confined to one role or unit.
Rather than formal training, the sessions centre on real scenarios, common risks and practical approaches to protecting systems and information at UNSW. Participants are encouraged to ask questions, share experiences and learn how others manage security considerations in their work.
“It’s useful to hear how different teams approach the same systems and risks. You come out of the sessions with a clearer understanding of what secure practice looks like in real situations,” said UNSW’s Cyber Awareness and Organisational Engagement Lead Michelle Ribeiro.
Supporting secure use of UNSW systems
Each CoP stream addresses a specific aspect of cyber security that affects staff across the University. You can attend every CoP meeting or register for individual sessions:
- Governance & Risk: discussions explore policies, responsibilities and risk management, supporting informed decision-making when working with data and systems.
- Awareness: sessions highlight the role people play in cyber security, from recognising threats to communicating clearly about secure behaviours.
- Secure Coding :sessions focus on reducing security weaknesses and problems in systems settings and application code, helping staff understand how secure design and development supports safer digital environments.
Together, the CoPs can help you build confidence in using UNSW systems securely and understanding how your actions contribute to the University’s broader cyber security posture.
Strengthening shared responsibility
By bringing staff together regularly, the Cyber Security CoPs help build a shared understanding of security across UNSW.
Sessions are open to all UNSW staff with an interest in improving secure practices in their work.
