In a continual effort to ensure the safety of our campus community, the UNSW Emergency Management Team conducts emergency preparedness exercises across campus year-round.
These exercises include trial evacuations and lockdowns across UNSW buildings to strengthen our collective readiness in the event of an emergency.
What to expect
Exercises take place at various times across campus during the year. The dates and times for each building are managed locally by the Chief Warden, who liaises with key building stakeholders to coordinate activities.
Before each exercise, a PA announcement clearly advises building occupants that an exercise is underway. This announcement confirms the scenario is a drill and that everyone in the building is required to participate.
During the exercise, occupants must follow instructions from:
- Emergency Coordinators
- Wardens
- UNSW Security
- other personnel leading the exercise.
Why this matters
These exercises play an important role in building a safer UNSW community by:
- giving students and staff the opportunity to understand what actions to take in an emergency
- reinforcing awareness of emergency procedures and response roles
- testing alarm and PA systems to ensure they are fully operational
- identifying opportunities to improve emergency response capability.
Participating in these drills helps ensure, in a real emergency, everyone is prepared to respond quickly, safely and confidently.

We recognise that lockdown exercises may be unsettling for some members of our community.
If you have any questions, concerns or support needs relating to an upcoming exercise, please contact your building’s Chief Warden or email: emergency@unsw.edu.au.
By working together and actively participating in these exercises, we can continue to strengthen UNSW’s readiness and keep our community safe.
