With the rollout of AI support tools underway, UNSW is entering the next phase of our AI journey.

The introduction of OpenAI ChatGPT Edu for fixed-term and continuing staff and other endorsed AI tools marks a major milestone. This is the beginning to ensure you can confidently, ethically and responsibly use AI support tools.

“AI isn’t just for technophiles, it’s for all of us,” said Dr Christine Burns, UNSW’s Chief Information Officer.

“We’re introducing these tools to enhance and support our work, how we learn, research and collaborate, while maintaining our strong focus on ethics, data protection and academic integrity.”

How we got here

Throughout 2024–2025, UNSW led one of the most comprehensive AI pilot programs in the higher education sector. Staff from across faculties tested tools such as Copilot and ChatGPT, helping to shape how AI can safely, ethically and effectively support our work.

A consistent theme emerged from both pilots: staff are eager to build confidence in using AI responsibly and recognise the importance of ongoing training, governance and support.

Building on these insights, UNSW IT is now releasing licences to staff cohorts to help develop skills and confidence in real-world use. As one of the first rollouts of its kind in Australian higher education, this phase will also help us better understand patterns of use, adoption and impact across the University.

What’s next

  • Access for staff (optional): Fixed-term and continuing staff are now eligible and can opt in to request an OpenAI ChatGPT Edu license. Find out more.
  • Capability uplift: If you have a licence, you are strongly encouraged to complete the AI Fundamentals course.
  • Responsible use: All AI activity at UNSW is governed by the Information Governance Policy, Responsible and Ethical AI Framework, our Assurance Framework and AI governance group. Your critical thinking must remain at the forefront of AI tool use.
  • Experiment:  Once you’ve got access, take a moment to explore and see what’s possible. When you open ChatGPT, you’ll simply sign in. You must use your zID and Single Sign-On. From there, try out prompts, test ideas and see how it might support your work. Think of this as your sandbox: a safe space to experiment, play, and get comfortable using AI in your day-to-day activities.

By engaging with these AI support tools and building AI literacy, we’re helping to shape a future that is inclusive, ethical and distinctly UNSW.
