Goldstein College Dining Hall leftover meals find new purpose through Food Hub.
Food Hub, the free food pantry initiative led by Arc, has reached an exciting milestone in its mission to support the UNSW community while tackling food waste. Since early 2024, Food Hub has proudly rescued 1354 kilograms of leftover meals from the Goldstein College Dining Hall – the equivalent of almost 2000 meals!
This ready-to-eat food, prepared by the catering contractor for Goldstein Dining Hall and redistributed by the Food Hub team, helps nourish students who often don’t have time or resources to cook healthy meals. Food Hub continues to be a lifeline for the UNSW community, with more than 1000 free meals distributed weekly at both the Kensington and Paddington campuses.
“By having a team willing to embrace Food Hub's goals, we are proud of the impact we've had on student wellbeing and waste reduction,” said Sophia Clark, Food Hub Coordinator.
This partnership between Food Hub, UNSW Colleges and the catering contractor demonstrates the power of collaboration in achieving environmental sustainability. By preventing more than a tonne of food from ending up in the bin, the initiative directly supports UNSW’s target of reducing general waste while creating tangible social value in line with our UNSW Strategy: Progress for All.
“On average, Australians waste one-third of their food, while 3.4 million households struggled to put a meal on the table last year. This initiative is a win–win–win: Food Hub prevents valuable resources from being wasted, nourishes the UNSW community, and sets a powerful example of sustainability leadership for the wider food industry,” said Mylene Turban, UNSW Sustainability Engagement Manager.
“Achieving a milestones like this reminds us of what’s possible when we care for people and the planet one meal at a time.”
