The three-part Novel Thinking series will feature writers from the faculty community.
UNSW Arts, Design & Architecture has launched a new podcast series Novel Thinking to share and discuss novels written by faculty staff and alumni. Each episode will take you behind the scenes of the storytelling process and explore the themes and ideas raised in the work.
Episode 1: Miles Franklin Undercover
Listen now to the first episode featuring Dr Kerrie Davies, Senior Lecturer, School of the Arts & Media, in conversation with Associate Professor Fiona Morrison as they dive into Kerrie’s latest page-turner, Miles Franklin Undercover, published in March 2025.
In this fascinating episode, Kerrie and Fiona journey back to the early 1900s to explore the little-known years of Miles Franklin’s life when she created her own brilliant career. They reveal how Franklin went undercover as a domestic servant in Australia and emerged as a fierce advocate for working women in Chicago.
Kerrie shares her experience working with an unpublished manuscript by Franklin, how she brought Miles’s voice to life and the creative process behind capturing one of Australia’s most iconic literary figures.
In addition to her work at UNSW, Kerrie has been a visiting fellow at the State Library NSW and writes for the Conversation. Her previous book, A Wife's Heart, created national discussion about the poet Henry Lawson and his marriage. She has appeared at the Sydney Writers' Festival, Brisbane Writers Festival and the National Folk Festival. Kerrie lives on the NSW North Coast and in Sydney, with her husband Oliver and their two dogs, Ursa and Loki.
