National emergency alert test

On Monday 27 July, a test alert will be sent to all mobile devices in Australia.

The Australian Government will be conducting a national test of the Emergency Alert system (AusAlert), used to deliver urgent messages during serious emergencies such as bushfires, floods and other significant incidents.

This is an Australian Government-led system and test, not a UNSW system. The UNSW Emergency Management Team has no control over this broadcast, and this communication is provided for awareness only.

What to expect

The test alert will be sent at the same time across Australia on Monday 27 July. For NSW and ACT residents, the alert is being sent at 2.00pm.

You may notice:

• your phone vibrating
• a loud, siren-like alert sound (lasting around 10 seconds)
• a message appearing on your screen clearly marked as a test (ausalert.gov.au).

Why this matters

Emergency Alert is a critical tool used by emergency services to:

• provide timely warnings during major incidents
• share critical safety information
• help keep communities safe.

Testing ensures the system continues to function effectively when it is needed most.

What you need to do

You don’t need to do anything.

It is important to note:

• no action is required
• be aware that you will likely receive a test alert
• don’t be alarmed, this is not a real emergency.
