
UNSW Sydney has developed a centralised Equity Student Talent Pool to prioritise casual job opportunities for students from low-SES backgrounds and Gateway partner schools.
A new Equity Talent Pool is turning the success of the Gateway Equity Target (GET) into real-world career opportunities for students. By linking inclusive education with meaningful employment, the initiative helps foster a stronger sense of belonging and connection across the UNSW community.
For the first time, faculties and teams across the University can now access a pool of pre-screened, work-ready students from low-SES backgrounds for professional casual roles.
“The Equity Talent Pool is a practical way we can turn our commitment to student equity into action. By offering meaningful casual work to students from underrepresented backgrounds, we strengthen belonging, expand opportunity, and set them up for success beyond university. If you are in a position to hire, this is a chance for you to make a real difference," said Mary Teague, Director of Student Equity at UNSW.
To access the Equity Talent Pool during the initial phase, managers can email HR with the subject line ‘Equity Talent Pool’ to express interest or request student profiles. The pilot already includes 180 vetted students with capabilities across areas such as event support and communications, searchable by skillset to support shortlisting.
The initiative delivers impact for students:
- by embedding equity across the full student lifecycle from entry to professional preparation and post-graduation outcomes
- with casual employment during study, supporting students to build financial stability, networks and confidence to set them up for success securing full-time employment after studies
- through university-wide impact, it’s a scalable model giving widespread access to equal opportunity helping deliver the UNSW Strategy: Progress for All
By making the Equity Talent Pool part of everyday hiring, UNSW is removing barriers and creating a university where opportunity doesn’t stop at enrolment.
