Our courtesy bus is now wrapped in artwork from a student graduation project exploring how humans and other organisms can become creative partners.

To celebrate 50 years of UNSW Art & Design, the University’s beloved shuttle bus has been adorned with an artwork by PhD candidate Jiaying Qian.

Jiaying’s Design Honours graduation project, Modina, brings together digital agents and living organisms in a collaboration that explores how design can transcend serving humans and begin involving other life forms as creative partners. For this piece, Jiaying worked with slime mould and spirulina.

UNSW Art & Design is one of the six schools that comprise UNSW Arts, Design & Architecture. It has a rich history, beginning when Alexander Mackie College became part of UNSW in 1975. Over the years, the school has been known as the City Art Institute and College of Fine Arts, before becoming the UNSW School of Art & Design in 2014.

The school’s 50th anniversary will be celebrated this year through a publication, events and campus activations. Stay tuned for more information.
