The Student Communications & Web Team help you cut through the noise and connect with students in impactful ways.
As champions of the student voice, they are your subject matter experts in student engagement. Whether supporting University-wide initiatives such as myPlan and the annual Student Experience Survey, or delivering targeted cohort communications, they work with stakeholders across the University to ensure every message is student focused.
Students are at the heart of everything the Student Communications & Web Team do, which is why student insights guide their communications strategy. In 2024, they investigated student email volume at UNSW and found that students receive, on average, 400 emails per year from various sources across the University. While there’s often a perception that more emails mean more visibility, they’re working hard to reduce email volume and use all channels to improve the quality and relevance of every message.
High-impact channels
Last year, the Student Comms & Web team received more than 800 ad-hoc comms requests from across the University. Some of their high-impact channels include:
- UNSW Student News: the weekly student newsletter goes to all UNSW students during term time. It’s a trusted, official publication for students, covering everything they need and want to know. Sections of the newsletter are tailored to specific cohorts and groups of students, so each newsletter is unique to its reader. The newsletter has amazing engagement – with a 46.6% open rate!
- Current students website: the current students’ website is the source of truth for everything from enrolment, events, key dates, resources and much more. Last month it had 1,133,744 page views – it’s how our students can stay up to date with everything going on at UNSW.
- Current students Instagram: the @unswstudents Instagram following has tripled in the past three years, to more than 18,000 followers. Follow @unswstudents on Instagram!
- Specific cohort newsletters: the Student Comms team works together with stakeholders to create regular newsletters for their cohort, in addition to the weekly Student News. Check out past editions of EngScope, Inside Law & Justice, Inside Medicine & Health, Nura Gili News, ELS News (Equitable Learning Services) and The CAtch – the UNSW Business School’s Career Accelerator news.
