This October, UNSW is supporting National Safe Work Month, a national campaign that encourages workplaces around Australia to prioritise work health and safety (WHS) and take action to reduce work-related injuries, illnesses and fatalities.

The theme for National Safe Work Month in 2026 is ‘Safe work is for life’. It reflects the fundamental purpose of WHS: to protect workers’ lives, health and future. The theme recognises that WHS is about more than preventing harm in the moment. It is about designing safe and healthy work that prevents injury, illness and long-term harm that can affect every part of life at work, at home and well into the future.

At UNSW, our focus for National Safe Work Month is enhancing our risk awareness. Recognising hazards and understanding how risks can affect people are practical steps that help us design safer and healthier work. By identifying risks early, we can make informed decisions about how work is planned and carried out, helping to protect people’s health and wellbeing now and into the future.

Activities, resources and prizes

Throughout October, we’ll share resources and activities on the Safety@UNSW site to help you better identify hazards and build your risk awareness. You’ll also have the opportunity to win prizes by participating in the weekly activities. In addition, a $100 dining voucher will be awarded for the highest-quality hazard and action plan entry submitted in Salus during October.

This is an opportunity to get involved and take a moment to think about what safe work means to you. Even small actions can make a difference.

Visit the National Safe Work Month page on the Safety@UNSW site to find out more and take part.
