Barker St accommodation

UNSW is preparing two State Significant Development Applications (SSDAs) for our Kensington campus – and we want to hear from you.

UNSW is proposing two redevelopment projects on Barker Street at our Kensington campus: a student accommodation redevelopment and parking station upgrade. The projects will expand student housing, including affordable options, to support our growing and diverse student body and will enhance sustainability. They will also improve accessibility and safety as well as easing traffic congestion on surrounding streets.

N13 student accommodation redevelopment

The proposed student accommodation redevelopment will replace ageing facilities with new, purpose-built student housing with approximately 711 beds across three buildings. The design includes residential colleges and self-contained apartments. Communal dining, landscaped courtyards and social and study spaces will foster social connections and academic success. The project targets 5 Star Green Star and WELL Gold ratings, reflecting UNSW’s commitment to sustainable design and the wellbeing of our students on campus.

N18 Barker Street parking station upgrade

The proposed parking station upgrade will provide around 1400 car spaces across eight levels and 130 bicycle spaces, improving safety, access and reducing local street congestion. Energy-efficient lighting, solar panels, electric vehicle charging stations and end-of-trip facilities will promote active and sustainable transport options. A new intersection with signals at Barker Street and Southern Drive (Gate 14) will further improve safety and traffic flow.

Both development applications will be submitted to the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure in early 2026.
