The UNSW Centre for Ideas is seeking talented academics, researchers and PhD students to join this unique public speaking professional development program.

UNSOMNIA offers academics, researchers and PhD students a chance to refine their presentation skills and develop a 10-minute talk about their area of expertise. Participants will benefit from expert training in public speaking, content development for public audiences and reputation building. The program culminates in live events on campus where participants showcase their ideas.

This year, participants will consider the question: “Progress? Where are we heading?”.

All UNSOMNIA participants will receive a suite of digital assets to promote their work, including:

  • a professionally filmed video of their talk
  • a professionally recorded podcast
  • professional headshots.

Through the program, past participants have been able to build their academic profile, access media opportunities and a general public audience for their work, and develop a network of academics and researchers across the University.

Associate Professor Kate Faasse participated in the program in 2021.

“I had such a wonderful time doing UNSOMNIA and have been able to use the skills I learned, as well as the talk itself, to pitch to a politician and to provide additional information for a documentary-maker working with the ABC,” she said.

Who can apply?

UNSOMNIA is open to UNSW academics, researchers and PhD students from all faculties, centres and institutes.
